“We are spatial beings — and the spaces we create become extensions of ourselves.”

Greg Townsend

For some, Space Clearing and Feng Shui are used interchangeably. And while these practices can beautifully complement one another, they are not the same and it's important to specify their difference.

Using the wrong tool for the wrong issue can lead to frustration, poor results, or just temporary relief that ultimately doesn't last. It could also lead to the false belief that something is “wrong” with you (or your practitioner) when in actuality, the environment itself is the problem.

Understanding the distinction between these two modes of holistic home support can help you choose the right support at the right time—and recognize when moving or relocation is really the real solution.

Some home locations are simply unsustainable. They will continuously drain energy, and no amount of energy work can mitigate this. You will always be chasing a moving target that will ultimately lead to burnout or dis-ease.

What Space Clearing Does

.

Every home holds memories or "fingerprints" of:

  • Past arguments

  • Grief, illness, trauma

  • Chronic stress or burnout

  • Lingering emotions from previous occupants

  • Transitional moments (breakups, deaths, moves)

Space Clearing works primarily with these subtle, emotional, and psychological residues in a space. It focuses on:

  • Releasing

  • Resetting

  • Clearing

  • Lightening

whatever energy has accumulated over time.

This modality is especially effective when:

  • A space feels off, heavy, or uncomfortable

  • You’ve experienced a recent emotional event

  • You feel drained or anxious at home for no clear reason

  • You’ve moved into a new place and don’t feel settled

  • You’re doing personal healing and your environment feels like it’s “holding onto” old patterns

Of course, there are limitations. Energy clearing does not influence or change the structural, directional, or material conditions of a space.

Space clearing helps release and let go of energy, whereas Feng Shui helps the energy move and flow.

What Feng Shui Consults Do

Feng Shui takes energy clearing a step further. It is not just about “good vibes”—it’s about getting to the root of imbalance and examining cause and effect.

It provides long-term, sustainable support by correcting ongoing environmental stressors and aligning the space with your nervous system and life goals.

Feng Shui works with the physical, spatial, and environmental systems that influence your life over time.

This includes:

  • The location of the building

  • Orientation to sun, roads, and landforms

  • Flow of energy through doors, rooms, and pathways

  • Bedroom placement, bed direction, and rest quality

  • Kitchen, wealth, health, and relationship zones

  • Long-term energetic patterns tied to time and space

A Feng Shui consultation looks at:

  • Why certain life areas remain stuck despite effort

  • Why health, finances, or relationships struggle persistently

  • Why sleep is poor no matter how much you “clear the energy”

  • Why motivation drops or conflict increases in certain rooms

Reminder: neither energy clearing, nor feng shui, can ultimately override toxic relationships or physically or psychologically unsafe situations. If the environment continuously generates stress or stagnation, imbalance will ultimately return.

How to Know Which One You Need

You likely need Space Clearing if:

  • The issue appeared suddenly

  • The space felt fine before an emotional event

  • You feel emotional heaviness but no consistent life pattern

  • You want closure, grounding, or a reset

You likely need Feng Shui if:

  • The same problems repeat no matter what you try

  • Sleep, finances, health, or relationships are chronically affected

  • Multiple people feel "off" or unwell in the same space

  • You’ve moved homes and your life noticeably changed—for better or worse

You likely need BOTH if:

  • You’ve lived in a space for years and gone through major life events

  • You’re healing trauma and want your environment to support integration

  • You’re entering a new chapter (career shift, relationship, recovery)

  • You want both immediate relief and long-term change

  • You're setting up the house to sell

  • You're setting up the house to move into

The Golden Rule: Feng Shui first, Space clearing second. Start by correcting the foundation of what's generating energy imbalance in the first place, then finish by clearing the remaining accumulated residue.

When Neither Will Create Permanent Change

This is the conversation many practitioners avoid—but it’s essential.

There are situations where no amount of energetic practices, adjustments or remedies can compensate for an unhealthy or unsafe environment. Your nervous system (ie your energy field) will never thrive in a space where peace is lacking or where constant vigilance or survival mode is required.

It’s important to be honest about the limits of all types of energy work. Neither feng shui or other energy clearing practices can overcome the reality of :

1. Toxic or Aggressive Housemates or Neighbors

  • Chronic stress

  • Chronic noise

  • Boundary violations

  • Verbal or physical harassment

  • Financial or Emotional Instability

  • Abusive dynamics

2. Poor Location or Land Stress

  • Buildings next to highways or intersections

  • Mold or excess moisture

  • Constant traffic noise, congestion or pollution

  • Structures built on unstable or disturbed land

  • Lack of natural light, airflow, or quiet

  • Crime, legal or safety issues

3. Other Unhealthy or Unsafe Living Conditions

  • Structural issues (damage, drainage)

  • Poor air quality

  • Too many people in too little space

  • No ability to rest, relax, or regulate

In these cases, the most aligned action usually involves leaving, even if that process takes time.

Physical stressors create energetic stress—not the other way around.

Letting Go

Sometimes the most powerful shift doesn’t come from fixing, clearing, or optimizing a space—it comes from listening to what it’s telling you. Like people, spaces come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime.

There are moments when a home has done its job, held you through a chapter or two of life, and now no longer matches the version of who you are becoming. Acknowledging that truth can feel like grief, failure, or fear all at once, especially when time, money, or memories are attached to a place.

But honoring that a space is no longer a fit is an act of self-respect, not defeat. When you stop trying to chase and force alignment to an environment where it no longer exists, something profound happens: your energy stops leaking and draining.

Letting go creates room—emotionally, energetically, and practically—for something better to meet you. You deserve a space that supports your nervous system, your health, your work, and your rest. Your home should feel like a partner in your life, not something you have to battle or endure. A place that feels nourishing and allows you to thrive in mind, body and spirit

Reminder: You are allowed to outgrow spaces just as you outgrow roles, relationships, and identities

The Hybrid Approach

If possible, the most aligned sequence is as follows:

1. Feng Shui First

  • Decluttering

  • Opening pathways

  • Improving lighting and airflow

  • Simplifying furniture layout

  • Supporting the entry and primary rooms

These simple acts alone will do wonders for the energy of the space.

2. Space Clearing Second

  • Release emotional imprints or energetic attachments

  • Neutralize the energy and make it more universally appealing

This combination creates both a tangible, visual and spatial changes AND a felt, energetic shift.

Why I Pair Energy Clearings with Feng Shui Consultations

For a while I offered energy clearings and feng Shui consultations as separate services. And while each can be powerful on its own, experience has shown me something important: lasting change happens when both the energetic and the physical layers of a space are addressed together.

First we must address the underlying structure of the space—layout, flow, elemental balance, and how the home is actually supporting (or draining) you. Without this step, those patterns often return. After that, an energy clearing can remove emotional residue and imprints from past occupants or experiences to further bring relief, clarity, and lightness.

By nature, Feng Shui consultations already include energy clearing because they work directly with how Qi (source energy) moves, settles, and circulates through a space. When you shift layout, balance the elements, improve flow, and address stagnant areas, you are actively clearing stuck or depleted energy at its source so the space can continuously clear and regulate itself over time.

This is why I no longer offer energy clearings as a standalone service. Not because they aren’t effective—but because I value results that last. I see your home as a living system to heal longterm, not just a means for collecting new clients.

NOTE: A standalone space clearing is the exception, not the rule. If you're one of those rare clients who already understands feng shui principles and are confident that your home is optimized fully already, then I may allow a space clearing ritual or ceremony on its own. In this case, I would request photos or videos of the space in advance to determine whether a clearing alone is appropriate—or if a full Feng Shui consultation would be more effective and supportive. This ensures we are both using our time and resources effectively!

Feng Shui restructures and realigns how the energy flows while Space Clearing recalibrates and reinforces the overall energy shift. Together, they create changes that are not just felt—but sustained for the long haul.

The Real Purpose of These Modalities

Space clearing and Feng Shui are about letting spaces thrive so that YOU can too. It's about removing unnecessary strain so your natural intelligence, health, creativity, and abundance can flow.

Sometimes that means decluttering your space.

Sometimes that means rearranging your space.

Sometimes that means clearing old emotional residue.

Sometimes it requires all three of these steps.

And sometimes it means facing the reality and honoring the truth that a place is no longer a fit for you. This can be a hard truth to swallow, but the freedom and clarity that comes with it is liberating.

A home energy consultation doesn’t promise miracles—it offers clarity. And clarity is often the most powerful form of abundance.

If you’re ready to stop patching symptoms and start working with your space in a deeper, more sustainable way, I’d be honored to support you.

As mentioned, feng Shui consultations have energy clearing woven directly into the process, but if space clearing is also a priority for you due to negative predecessor energy, I offer an affordable a-la carte add on.

Book your Feng Shui consultation today and let’s create a space that truly supports the future you are working towards.
