The Chakra System: Where Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Science

"The chakras are not just spinning wheels of light. They are the architecture of the soul."

Anodea Judith

The chakra system isn’t “woo.” It’s a sophisticated framework mapped by ancient yogis thousands of years ago through deep observation, embodiment, and practice.

Today, modern anatomy and neuroscience are beginning to validate what these traditions have long understood: the body is not just physical—it is electrical, emotional, and deeply interconnected.

The truth is, chakras are not abstract ideas floating above the body. They are reflections of how your nervous system processes safety, stress, connection, and meaning.

Chakras are simply patterns. Patterns of breath. Patterns of posture. Patterns of emotion and perception. Always communicating. And when the body changes its patterns, energy follows.

What Chakras Actually Are (And What They Aren’t)

We often hear chakras described as spinning wheels of energy that need to be “opened” or “unblocked.”

But this framing can be misleading. They are not clogged pipes. They are portals.

When energy feels “stuck,” it’s usually not because something is broken—it’s because your body has adapted to a certain way of being, or holding energy.

  • Tight shoulders.

  • Shallow breathing.

  • Chronic stress.

  • Emotional suppression.

These are natural survival responses.

“The chakras represent different levels of consciousness and stages in the journey toward self-realization.”

Swami Satyananda Saraswati

The Seven Chakras: A Map of Human Experience

Each of the seven main chakras corresponds to a core aspect of being that form a progression of questions:

  • Root : Am I physically safe?

  • Sacral: Am I safe to be myself?

  • Solar Plexus: Am I safe to feel?

  • Heart: Is it safe to love or be loved?

  • Throat : Am I safe to express?

  • Third Eye: Can I see clearly?

  • Crown:  Can I trust the greater whole?

Beyond the Seven Chakras

The traditional system doesn’t stop at seven of the primary chakras

Lower/Shadow Chakras (Talas)

These represent the unconscious and instinctual layers: Fear, survival drives, shadow patterns

They are not “bad”—they are raw energy waiting to be integrated.

Higher/Light Realms (Lokas)

These represent expanded states of consciousness: Wisdom, unity, transcendence

Together, they mirror a full spectrum of growth from instinct to embodiment to enlightenment.

When the nervous system feels safe, it naturally begins to regulate. And when regulation happens, the chakras don’t need to be opened—they come back online.

“Grace, light, peace and love arises when chakras in the body are in balance.”

Amit Ray

A System of Balance and Repetition

Early wounds are very different from later wounds, and thus require different healing approaches. A first chakra wound (neglect in infancy) is about survival itself, the feeling that the world is unsafe. A fourth chakra wound (betrayal in childhood) is about love, the feeling that you cannot trust anyone.

Chakras don’t operate in isolation—they exist in relationship to another.

  • Root ↔ Crown: Grounded in reality while open to higher consciousness

  • Sacral ↔ Third Eye: Creativity guided by intuition

  • Solar Plexus ↔ Throat: Power expressed through truth

  • Heart: The central bridge integrating all layers

These pairings reveal a deeper truth: alignment is not about ascending—it’s about INTEGRATING. Spiritual bypassing will simply not work.

You can't meditate to avoid anger, do yoga to avoid grief, or chant to avoid the hard work of setting boundaries. Authentic spirituality integrates the shadow. It does not transcend it.

In other words, Healing is an upward spiral, not linear, not a ladder You don't "clear" a chakra once and then move on. You work on the root, then the sacral, then the heart, and then you loop back to the root again at a deeper level. You continue to revisit the same wounds at different stages of life, each time with more resources and understanding.

A dysregulated nervous sysem is your energy system out of alignment or balance.

“The cakras are conceived as subtle centers of consciousness and energy… forming part of the subtle body.”

George Feuerstein

The Central Channels

In yogic tradition, the chakras are aligned along the Sushumna Nadi, the central energy channel running along the spine.

It is flanked by:

  • Ida (feminine, lunar, intuitive)

  • Pingala (masculine, solar, active)

When these energies balance, life force (Prana) flows throughout the body. This is often described as 'Kundalini Awakening'—not as a sudden event, but as a gradual return to coherence between body, mind, and spirit.

The Sushumna Nadi is often reminiscent of the Vagus Nerve, the cranial nerve that runs from the brainstem through the body (heart, lungs, gut). This nerve regulates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digestion, safety) and plays a key role in emotional regulation and stress response

The vagus nerve is the body’s main communication highway between the brain and the organs, regulating relaxation, digestion, heart rate, and the nervous system’s ability to feel safe and calm. You can think of it as the connector along the holding all of the chakras in place.

Both the Sushuman Nadi (the energetic) and the Vagus Nerve (the biological) are central pathways that connect the brain and body, influencing regulation and balance and overall well-being.

Our Plexuses are nerve hubs on the spinal cord where the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems meet. They are centered around major organs and endocrine glands, aligning with the body’s main Chakras that link the physical and energetic bodies.

Balanced chakras are the key to your highest self - creativity, manifestation, healing, and inner peace.

How This Compares to Other Systems

Human Design & Gene Keys

The BodyGraph maps energy centers similar to chakras but focuses on:

  • Decision-making (Strategy & Authority)

  • Energy consistency vs. openness

Similarity: Both systems describe energetic patterns within the body.

Difference: Human Design is more mechanical and predictive; chakras are more experiential and somatic.

Chinese Medicine Meridian System

Traditional Chinese Medicine maps meridians, or energy pathways (Qi), throughout the body. Where chakras are like energy hubs, meridians are highways.

Similarity:

  • Both recognize energy flow as essential to health

  • Practices like Tai Chi and acupuncture regulate this flow

Difference:

  • Chakras are vertical centers along the spine

  • Meridians are a network system flowing throughout the entire body

Kabbalah (Tree of Life)

The Tree of Life describes energy moving through ten sefirot.

Similarity:

  • Both map the journey from divine source → physical embodiment

  • Both emphasize balance and integration

Difference:

  • Kabbalah is more symbolic and philosophical

  • Chakras are more body-centered and experiential

The lotuses (chakras) are strung on the Sushumna like gems on a thread.”

Sat-Cakra-Nirupana

Activating & Balancing the Chakras

Balancing the chakras through asana, breathwork, mantra, and meditation not only shifts our energy but also regulates our nervous system, lowers stress hormones, and brings us into homeostasis.

Activating the vagus nerve involves combining principles of chakra energy work with techniques known to stimulate the vagus nerve, which plays a crucial role in parasympathetic nervous system regulation, promoting relaxation and healing and overall wellbeing.

The Real Work: Retraining the Body

The shift to enlightenment doesn’t come from forcing energy upward, or downward.

It comes from retraining the body:

  • Becoming aware

  • Breathing deeper

  • Moving differently

Instead of forcing energy to move, somatic practices invite you to tune in and really listen to the body with presence, attention and awareness. What are the subtle sensations, impulses and breath telling you?

“When your energies are balanced, your body and mind function at their best.”

Sadhguru

Final Truth: Everything Is Already Speaking

Chakras are not rungs you climb on a ladder. They are messages you listen and respond to.

Each sensation, emotion, or pattern is feedback, pointing you back toward balance in your own time and way. When you begin to slow down, notice, and adjust your thoughts, breath or movement, your energy naturally starts to shift.

By harmonizing mind, body and spirit together, we find peace

If you’re ready to explore this more deeply, start simple: take a breath, check in with your body, and ask what it needs. And if you want support in understanding your unique patterns and bringing your space and energy into alignment, I’d love to work with you.
